Accommodation - for riders and horses

Carhorse in bedWander along the 'High Street' of any Border town and within seconds you'll find yourself standing outside an old coaching inn with a cobbled, arched close leading to a handsome stable yard at the back. These wonderful inns with their distinctive, Scottish architectural features certainly evoke the imagination. It's easy to drift back in time and visualise the weary, rain soaked traveller and his horse, arriving as night falls: tired, hungry and thankful for the refuge, warmth and hospitality bestowed by the landlord - and groom.

Some things just don't change! The Borders is still a perfect haven for travelling horses and riders yet while the old inns themselves may no longer offer 'hospitality' for horses, there are plenty of new establishments in the Borders that most certainly do.

New riding routes are being established in many parts of the Borders. Horse ownership and the popularity of riding holidays are on the increase. There is widespread recognition that we in the Borders have something very special to offer horse and rider. Consequently, more and more hotels, B&B's, guest houses and farms are now offering accommodation to both horse and rider. In addition, there are also many new livery yards happy to stable your horse overnight or for a few days, while you book yourself into a nearby hotel.

Of course you can also enjoy a horsy holiday without your own horse! Hacking, dressage and schooling lessons are readily available at short notice while for those preferring the role of spectator, summer in the Scottish Borders is packed with exciting equestrian events. Many of our hotels provide an ideal base from which to enjoy all of these activities and are a mere stones'- throw from some of our excellent riding centres.
