Shires, hunters, thoroughbreds, ponies, donkeys - even cattle and goats - have all found their feet, in the capable hands of father and son Stewart and Steven Shiel who run their two Borders businesses in tandem.
Drawing on a lifetime's experience of shoeing horses all over the Scottish Borders, Stewart is a great fan of heavy horses and more intriguingly, of donkeys: "I've rescued hundreds of donkeys over the years, " says Stewart. "Some time back, you never got a thoroughbred over from Ireland without a donkey too! Some of these poor little beasts were in a hell of a state and I just used to take them home, get them back on their feet and re-home them. I loved doing it and it was great to see them going on to a happier life."
Steven (Beezer) Shiel's tastes in horses are more racy and he always makes a beeline for any new thoroughbred in site when father and son roll up on a yard to begin their work.
Based at Elliston Smithy near St. Boswells, this father and son team love their work. As highly skilled and knowledgeable 'remedial farriers' they provide much more than just a basic shoeing service and can be contacted on:
