Fast..... fun..... leisurely..... exciting..... competitive.....
Polo is a great family sport. It can be played by all ages. It can be loads of fun too, especially if you come to the Borders and spend a day with The Border Reivers Polo Club where beginners are most definitely welcome.
Perhaps the Border Reivers don't have quite the same mystical aura as those intrepid players of old in Kashmir, Gilgit and Manipur where the game originated but they do have a certain panache and unique style of their own. They are also very good at enjoying themselves while playing 'Hockey on Horseback,' as polo was termed in the UK in 1871.
Now, near Greenlaw, the Border Reivers extend a warm welcome to everyone who is interested in taking part - either on horseback or on a bicycle! The club is only one hour's drive from both Edinburgh and Newcastle.
"At Pittlesheugh," says Will Ramsay who runs the club, "We have a full size polo ground, pavilion, ponies, paddocks and a wooden horse. We can offer lessons for beginners and livery for those with ponies. We have ponies for hire. Our professional Argentinian polo player can train failed racehorses or children's' ponies into polo ponies. We even offer bicycle polo for the non-riders."
"It is a great family sport which you can play from 13 to 70ish; one team near here consists of three generations of one family - not many team sports could boast that."
They play midweek evenings in the summer, and at weekends play in the afternoons.
