The Scottish Borders - a Riders' Paradise.
Swing into your saddle and explore our unrivalled choice of quiet country roads, forestry tracks, riverside rides, wild windswept hills and glorious open country. Here in the Borders we pride ourselves on having what is now widely referred to as 'Scotland's Horse Country!'
For years local riders have been quietly enjoying the spectacular riding that this region of Scotland has to offer. Many of our riding centres have established excellent relationships with local farmers and landowners and can, under supervision, offer superb hacking to their customers around some of the prettiest countryside in Europe.
Trust built over the years plus common sense have played a vital role in enabling us to have good access to our riding country. It was feared that recent changes with access legislation could change all this, with riders apparently becoming increasingly unclear about where to go without upsetting others. Happily, a raft of fresh, local access initiatives has recently been put in place which has helped immensely to clarify the position facing all those who wish to enjoy our countryside on horseback.
A recently launched 350 km network of multi-use countryside trails has opened up exciting new opportunities for riders in the Borders and has added to the selection of favourite existing routes. This network is being extended in 2006/7 and is already acting as a powerful catalyst to our burgeoning equestrian tourism industry, contributing to the visitor's enjoyment of the Borders. The BHSS 'Horses Welcome' scheme also highlights the opportunities for riders who want to bring their horses with them on holiday or for a day's riding.
The historic Common Ridings and of course hunting within the law, offer local people and visitors, who are capable of riding at speed across rough country, yet another opportunity to experience the landscape of the Borders at first hand.
