St Marys LochEquestrian Tourism in the Southern Uplands

The Southern Uplands, a working landscape peppered with ancient hill forts, glorious abbeys, border battlefields, castles, reivers' hideaways and a range of landscapes - coastal, forest and hill. This is stunning riding country with picturesque villages and a growing number of specialist accommodation providers for visitors bringing their horses to explore the trails through the rural south of Scotland.

For three years now The Southern Uplands Partnership has been involved in a range of partnership projects to help develop equestrian tourism here. This work has included a large-scale market research project, work to develop of the South of Scotland Countryside Trails and Tweed Trails, a trail riding business seminar and now - the publication of guidance notes for those considering setting up a trail riding enterprise.

Thinking about offering accommodation and stabling for trail riders?

If you are - these guidance notes, which can be accessed now by clicking on this PDF file - provide an excellent starting point and cover key points that you need to consider.

These include:

Customer profile
Accommodation requirements for horses and riders
Additional services you can offer to boost your business income.

There is also information on the type of trails riders are looking for, how to develop a marketing "cluster" with other local businesses and suggestions on taking bookings, marketing and insurance. The survey findings and the guidance notes are also freely available from the Publications page of the Southern Uplands Partnership website where you will find lots of other relevant and interesting information.
